Maximilian I. (Maximilian Joseph) became to 27.May 1756 in Schwetzingen born and originated from a Pfälzer collateral line of the family Wittelsbacher. Its parents were Friedrich Michael, Duke of Pfalz Birkenfeld Bischweiler (1724-1767) and Marie Franziska of Sulzbach. Grew up it particularly in Strasbourg (France) Maximilian inherited 1778 the county Rappoltstein and became 1795 successors of Karl II. August duke of Pfalz Zweibrücken.


To 30.September 1785 he married Augusts Wilhelmine Maria, Princess of Hessen-darmstadt. From this marriage 5 children followed:

* Marie Anna Leopoldine, * Sophie Friederike Dorothee Wilhelmine
* Ludovika Wilhelmine, * Maximiliane Josepha Karoline
He became after the death of the Bavarian cure prince Karl IV. Theodor as next related in the year 1799, as Maximilian IV. Joseph its successors in Bavaria.
